You can take the 3-hour renewal course.
Your commission must stay active, with no lapse, until your new one is issued. If anything slips and it expires first, the 3-hour course no longer counts and you will need the 6-hour course. Start now.
We highly recommend the 6-hour course.
With 90 days or less left, there is a real risk your commission expires before the exam, background check and new commission are done. If it lapses, the 3-hour course no longer counts. The 6-hour course is valid either way.
You need the 6-hour course.
With 30 days or less left, there is not enough time to finish renewing before your commission expires, and the 3-hour course only counts if it never lapses.
You need the 6-hour course.
California only allows the 3-hour course for a commission that is still active with no lapse. Once a commission has expired, or if you were a notary in the past, the state requires the full 6-hour course.

Notary FAQ
Questions & Answers About Becoming a Notary Public.
Yes. You are required to complete our 3-hour training and retake the state exam in order to renew your notary commission.
Your online training course (6 or 3 hour) is valid for 12 months. After that time your course will expire and you will be required to purchase a new training course.
The steps are essentially the same as when you obtained your commission, with the exception of being able to take a 3-hour refresher course, so long as your commission does not lapse.
No. The 3-hour course only counts for a commission that is still active and never lapses. If your commission has expired, or you were a notary in the past, California requires the full 6-hour course.
If it expires in 30 days or less, you need the 6-hour course: there is not enough time to finish renewing before it expires. If it expires in 31 to 90 days, we highly recommend the 6-hour course, because it is valid whether or not your commission lapses. With more than 90 days left, the 3-hour course is fine. Check which course you need.
Longer than most people expect. After the course you register for and take the in-person state exam, wait about 15 to 20 business days for results, complete a Live Scan background check, wait for the Secretary of State to issue your new commission, then file your oath and bond. Start 6 to 9 months before your commission expires.
